Is smoking CBD cigarettes healthier than vaping e-cigarettes?
From 2006 to 2007, vaping was introduced in the US and Europe. This new method was meant to curb cigarette smoking. Before many people knew it, vaping became a popular trend among millennials and Generation X.
Problem is, it turned out to be a health issue which experts are trying to understand. In mid-October 2019, a mysterious lung disease broke out. This disease is tied to vaping and has affected more than 1,500 people in the US.
The disease has also killed 33 people among them, teenagers. By the time of publishing this post, the CDC had yet to identify the precise cause of the outbreak. While CDC has yet to pinpoint which device or product may be the cause. Chemicals in vaping liquids bought from black markets are the chief suspects.
Currently, different states in the US are banning vaping pens and accessories especially those that appeal to teenagers. While many people foresee the comeback of tobacco cigarettes, there are healthier alternatives.
Introducing CBD Cigarettes
Unlike vaping and e-cigarettes, CBD cigarettes have a similar look to tobacco cigarettes. If it were not for the brand names, you would easily mistake them. Unlike tobacco cigarettes, CBD cigarettes are pre-rolls.
This means they contain CBD, the non-psychoactive ingredient sourced from industrial hemp. As such, instead of inhaling nicotine, you get to inhale CBD enriched smoke. On October 22nd, 2019, Toast, an Aspen-based cannabis brand introduced CBD cigarettes.
The CBD pre-rolls are THC free and won’t get users high. Users don’t have to use any flavored e-cigarettes. This means they will not be susceptible to the mysterious lung disease currently affecting e-cigarette users.
The CBD cigarettes contain 100 mg of CBD. They do not contain pesticides, additives or chemicals. Why? The industrial hemp is grown, harvested and tested in the US for quality purposes.
Each CBD pre-roll can be smoked like a regular tobacco cigarette. In no way do the CBD pre-rolls resemble a joint. In fact, they are rolled in organic industrial hemp paper. Currently, there is no conclusive evidence that smoking cannabis or industrial hemp can curb tobacco smoking.
But researchers at University College London conducted a study in 2013. The study involved 24 tobacco smokers. These smokers were given an inhaler with CBD or a placebo. For one week, the participants had to use the inhaler with CBD if they felt an urge to smoke.
Those given the inhaler with CBD showed a 40% reduction in the use of tobacco cigarettes. What this means is that CBD cigarettes are a healthier alternative than vaping and tobacco smoking.
How CBD Benefits the Body
Cannabidiol is one of the 104 chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant and industrial hemp. As a non-intoxicating compound, it has many therapeutic effects on the human body. While it has traces of THC (0.3%), it does not get you high.
CBD has proven to be an effective remedy for a variety of health conditions. It offers relief from inflammation and chronic pain. In a 2012 study, researchers discovered that CBD suppresses neuropathic and inflammatory pain. How?
By targeting the glycine receptors in the body. It has anti-seizure properties and can treat children with epilepsy. In 2018, the FDA approved Epidiolex, a purified form of CBD oil used to treat rare and severe forms of epilepsy. These forms of epilepsy are Dravet Syndrome and Lennox Gastaut Syndrome.
CBD oil helps in treating people with depression and anxiety. In a 2015 study, researchers found out that CBD oil can reduce anxiety and depression. In fact, it can help those with PTSD, general anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and OCD.
CBD has lots of benefits and each day, researchers are adding more to the growing list.
Should CBD Cigarettes Be Viewed as Wellness Products?
Several health experts have come forward to say that CBD cigarettes should not be viewed as wellness products. Why? They pose health risks that we are yet to discover. According to the health experts, when you burn dried plant material, you will have by-products of combustion.
These by-products may have toxic carcinogenic effects just like tobacco cigarettes and vaping. Currently, there is no evidence to support this. What people should be confident about is that CBD has lots of health benefits.
These benefits are improving the living standards of many people around the world. From Hollywood celebrities to sports athletes, they are using CBD to treat chronic pain and other maladies.
